Second issue of FS_eZien available from FontShop BeNeLux

The content is an overview of FontShop articles from the last three months, culled from FontShop publishing venues including – but not limited to – The FontFeed and Unzipped. It is a highly subjective selection. FS_eZien – a nod to our Dutch customers – can be viewed on screen, but is printable if you’d rather do your reading on paper. Enjoy the read.

The Finer Points of Licensing: MUL

Whenever you acquire digital type a legal document is included with the actual fonts. The End User Licence Agreement (EULA) regulates the use of the fonts and defines what you may and may not do with them. Although most of the rules stipulated in these agreements are common sense (at least they seem to me) I sometimes hear from people who are feeling a bit clueless when reading the finer legal details. That’s why we’re taking the opportunity to examine a special kind of font licence: the Multi-User Licence or MUL.
You may remember from the FontPool project that FontShop has a swimming pool. Well, “had” to be precise, because two years ago it started leaking through a hole in the foil lining the inside of the pool. These days there is barely a large puddle of water left, amassing dead leaves. Somehow a mother duck chose this makeshift sanctuary to lay her eggs. Meet FontDuck and her family.
The typography of politics - 2010 Dutch edition

Election posters in the Netherlands. Photo by Sander Baumann
In Belgium we have until this weekend to make up our minds, but yesterday the Dutch already had national elections for the “Tweede Kamer”, their House of Representatives. Just like I did last year with the Belgian European and regional elections, I thought it’d be fun to take a look at the typography of the election posters. Regardless of who won the actual polls, here’s an overview of the best (and worst) typographic choices in Dutch politics.
The TYPO Berlin 2010 bag swag

I have to apologise for the lack of updates on Unzipped for the past week and a half. Not only did I attend TYPO Berlin 2010 “Passion” last week; I also had a Type Board meeting at FSI - FontShop International the day before the conference, and on Thursday I presented my talk Fonts, a Passionate Love Story, or an Abusive Relationship? at TYPO. Now that I am fully recovered from the very satisfying but exhausting experience, I can go back to my duties. One of my favourite things at type and design conferences is going through the goodies in the goody bag. I thought for this first post-conference post we’d do it together and share the fun of the discovery.
Jos Buivenga is a self-taught type designer based in Arnhem, the Netherlands, and the founder of the exljbris font foundry. Just like Flat-It Type Foundry his popular typefaces offer very good value for money, and what’s more – he offers one weight per family absolutely free.
