I feel very fortunate that we live in a civilized, humane country, where a person at the end of his life can decide to leave with dignity, without any more needless suffering.

Somewhat related – I would like to apologise to the people coming to tonight’s BNO Romeo Delta evening CUT! in Rotterdam for not showing up. The organisation is looking into rescheduling my presentation at a later date, most probably the next IMG LAB evening on February 20th.
For me personally it looks like the first half of the year is about to get really busy. Exactly one week from now I am doing the first of six presentations – one a month. I will be talking about Two Decades of Trajan in Movie Posters at the BNO Romeo Delta evening CUT! at De Unie in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The meeting on Monday, January 23 will be entirely dedicated to the magic of the silver screen, but from a designer’s viewpoint. Move over film stars, it’s time for the creators of movie posters, title sequences, art direction and special effects to walk the red carpet. It promises to be a very entertaining event.
Custom font for tombstone by Janno Hahn

I recently received pictures of a gorgeous project by Janno Hahn, a young type designer who collaborates with René Knip of ARK. At the request of a friend Janno designed custom fonts for the tombstone of her deceased father-in-law. His design strikes a marvellous balance between subdued dignity and contemporary elegance.
Nijhof and Lee Revisited

Yet sometimes wonders do exist. Last Wednesday June 15 the bookshop, now affiliated with the University of Amsterdam, opened its doors in its new location in the Special Collections lobby.
FontFont 55

For its 55th release, FontFont makes its iconic signature type family FF Meta travel further around the world, adding Hebrew to its character set, and extending the lightest weights – Hairline, Thin, and Light – with Cyrillic. Two fresh new families were added to the roster as well – FF Spinoza, a classic-looking but decidedly contemporary text face, and FF More, Łukasz Dziedzic’s serif companion to FF Good. And as usual a batch of typefaces were converted to Offc TTF and Webfont WOFF/EOT versions. Most importantly FontFont has entirely stopped offering PostScript versions of their fonts, as their complete library is now available in OpenType CFF format.
A Concise Guide To Webfonts

Thanks to webfonts, 2010 became a ground-breaking year in the type industry. Together with FontFont co-founder Erik Spiekermann, FSI FontShop International made a clear commitment to the new format. Then, on February 24, 2010, FontFont premiered its Web FontFonts. FSI FontShop International was the first type foundry to offer a type collection specifically aimed at web designers. Its number has grown to almost 2,500 FontFonts in .woff and .eot format, with all major FontFont text fonts available in both web font formats. Time for a refresher course.
