Fred Smeijers’ and Corina Cotorobai’s creations are not exclusively typographic. The latest project of the renowned Dutch type designer and his partner (who – together with FontShop BeneLux head honcho Rudy Geeraerts – run OurType) is in fact a tiny human. Indeed, early morning last Friday, April 23rd, Corina gave birth to their son, Gabriel.

Our fascination with the alphabet runs deep. I think it is our innate need to communicate that brings us to recognise character shapes in the world around us. This brings certain people to scour Google Earth for hours on end to find letter shapes in satellite images of the terrain. The most successful and beautiful so far is by Thomas de Bruin, who assembled a Google Earth alphabet of the Netherlands.

From 8 to 30 may 2010 the second edition of Graphic Design Festival Breda (GDFB) will take place. This biannual festival on graphic design delves into current developments in this discipline. A large part of it takes place in the public space.

The festival aims to surprise the general public and inspire professionals by revealing the communicative powers of graphic design within our daily visual culture. In a surprising though perceptible manner, talented designers connect graphic design, technology (like new media), social context (the presence of graphic design in one’s own environment / daily life) and the individual (the consumer).

Starting next month VIDE (Visual & Individual Design Experiences) is organizing Type Anatomy workshops. These introductions to type design aim at imparting insight in the basis of letters, type classification, character construction, and letter proportions. In five Saturday mornings or afternoons from May 22 to June 19 the participants will systematically analyse letters, and learn how to evaluate the qualities of type.

# 415.003, from Tokyo Japan. Photographer: Martin Holtkamp
Today we are trying something new. In response to the success of the FontFont release magazines, FontShop BeNeLux will publish quarterly eZines in PDF format. The content is an overview of FontShop articles from the last three months, culled from FontShop publishing venues including – but not limited to – The FontFeed and Unzipped. It is a highly subjective selection. FS_eZien – a nod to our Dutch customers – can be viewed on screen, but is printable if you’d rather do your reading on paper. Keep in mind this is a first issue, so we welcome your feedback and suggestions.

As the catalogue of FontShop continues to expand, it keeps surprising me how many people all over the world are professionally involved in type design. Sometimes you discover the most unlikely collections. The last FontShop Newsletter for example introduced Flat-It Type Foundry, which offers an eclectic range of display faces at terrific value for money. This one-man operation is run by Ryoichi Tsunekawa, a talented Japanese architecture grad whose appreciation for vintage lettering has yielded a charming library of novelty type for a variety of occasions.

O.K. Festival: 3 Days of Magazines – a unique three day festival focusing on independent magazines – opens on Friday April 16th, 2010. It is the first event in the Netherlands to offer a survey of independent magazines from all over the world. Under the title “Welcome Magazines” O.K. Festival presents the energy, diversity, and the visual explosion of strange, beautiful and original magazines. They are displayed in an exhibition, examined in workshops by renown magazine makers, discussed in presentations, and celebrated with a party. The festival takes place in Arnhem, and follows previous festivals about independent magazines in Luxemburg, Barcelona, and Tokyo.

A little while ago the winners of the Dutch book design competition The Best Dutch Book Designs 2009 were announced. This year thirty books were selected from a total of 415 entries. Later this year the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will organise the opening exhibition De Best Verzorgde Boeken 2009. This will coincide with the publication of the catalogue The Best Dutch Book Designs 2009 / De Best Verzorgde Boeken. The selection will subsequently travel to various national and international locations.

With all the new OpenType formats it gets a little difficult sometimes to see the wood for the trees. Inevitably every system has its downsides. If you offer few choices font users may feel their options are restricted. But when proposing numerous alternatives to meet the users’ wishes, ironically said users may feel overwhelmed and not know very well what the best option is. So I thought it’d be useful to do a round-up of the different OpenType formats available for FontFonts. I will use FF DIN as an example, as it is one of the families with the most options.

There are currently over 100,000 applications available in the App Store. And every single one of those apps has an icon. Dutch art director Ine Reijnen scoured them all, assembling an alphabet made from app icons consisting of single letters, numbers, and related symbol. She is now inviting everyone to send in Appoems, poetry of maximum 16 characters set in her Apphabet.
