I recently wrote about the font libraries that are offered offline by FontShop BeNeLux. As they aren’t featured on the sales site, many people don’t know of them. Yet before I start with the overview, I need to point out something else as well. Although you can’t find some of them on FontShop.com, the fonts of almost all the libraries FontShop carries are now available in OpenType font format.

Recently a couple of handy new features were added to the FontShop website. Browsing History and Favorites remembers your most important stuff so you don’t have to, while special collections called FontCases allow you to browse fonts genre, period, application and other subcategories. |

I dislike clichés as much as the next guy, but there are times I can’t but acknowledge there’s truth in most of them. One cliché was confirmed this past extended weekend; that you get to doubly appreciate the value of a something once it is missing. I needed to identify a typeface for a FontFeed post, but not having my FontBook at hand proved to be a considerable handicap. |

A while ago I explained on The FontFeed what the suffixes SH and SB – found in Scangraphic Digital Type Collection fonts – meant. Yet there are a lot more abbreviations which are commonly used in the world of typography, especially with regards to digital fonts. Some relate to glyph sets and font formats, others to supported languages and foundries, and so on. Their meaning may be obvious for the seasoned type user, but many type novices – and even regular users – are confused by a good number of them. Here’s a comprehensive overview.

“Thou hast birthed a human-child, Lydia” - illustration by Randall, made for the birth of my daughter Eliza © 1997 First and foremost, I’d like to wish you and yours a very happy, prosperous and successful 2008. Another year has come and gone, so this is the time where I briefly look back at the past year and forward at what the future might have in store for Unzipped this coming year.

Font Constructor is a new standalone application for educational use to research the basic construction of the alphabet. This easy-to-use and intuitive tool allows you to design basic elements, and use them to assemble your own ‘typeface’. By doing so, you learn which are the relationships between the different shapes in an alphabet and how they refer to each other. |

Normal service will resume on Thursday January 3rd. Unzipped on the other hand will stay live – I think I will be able to post some stuff in between the excessive eating, drinking and partying.

Corrections on printouts of ITC Officina Display by Erik Spiekermann This is the second instalment in a series of three articles that has us looking over the shoulder of the type designer and witnessing the creation of a new typeface. In the first episode we discovered that first and foremost a type designer needs to be an artist. Although this already is a crucial requirement, it is not by far sufficient if you want to create a decent typeface. This episode we’ll see that the type designer has to thoroughly master his craft.

Unzipped is closing shop for August. Time to get away from that computer monitor and soak up some sun! But I wouldn't leave you without something to watch on the occasional rainy day or short summer nights – the Personal Views series from ESAD Escola Superior de Artes e Design, Matosinhos.
