A while ago I explained on The FontFeed what the suffixes SH and SB – found in Scangraphic Digital Type Collection fonts – meant. Yet there are a lot more abbreviations which are commonly used in the world of typography, especially with regards to digital fonts. Some relate to glyph sets and font formats, others to supported languages and foundries, and so on. Their meaning may be obvious for the seasoned type user, but many type novices – and even regular users – are confused by a good number of them. Here’s a comprehensive overview.

I’ve been planning to reboot the Unzipped tutorials for a while, but didn’t know very well how to go about it. They were discontinued while I was showcasing my Paragraph Rules tricks. As every new episode built upon the previous one and I made the language switch since then, I have no other option but revisit the first two episodes and translate them. Else the last episode won’t make much sense. So I apologize to all the Dutch-speaking readers who will experience a severe case of déjà-vu.

Na de artistieke technieken in teken- en fotobewerkingsprogramma’s uit de vorige tutorials dacht ik nu eens productietechnieken in opmaakprogramma's aan bod te laten komen. Zoals ik in de inleiding van mijn eerste tutorial schreef, zijn dit oplossingen voor specifieke problemen die ik als grafisch ontwerper en opmaker tegenkwam. Iets waar ik heel vaak gebruik van maak zijn Paragraph Rules, want je kan er bijzonder veel mee doen.

Ik heb het er al over gehad bij mijn besprekingen van filmaffiches, maar hier is ie dan eindelijk: mijn lekker ouderwetse Adobe Photoshop-techniek om letters te laten ‘gloeien’. Dit is een van de allereerste technieken die ik ontwikkelde, toen ik nog maar net bij FontShop werkte. Ik vermeld dit enkel om duidelijk te maken dat ze waarschijnlijk voorbijgestreefd is, maar ik ken geen andere, dus hiermee zal je het moeten doen. :P

Er is iets onbestemd aan ouderwetse postkaarten, visitekaartjes en andere parafernalia dat ons steeds weer charmeert. De textuur van het vergeelde, licht gespikkelde papier. Het voelbare reliëf daar waar het loodzetsel zich in het papier drukte. De licht beduimelde randen en viltachtige hoeken. Ook de typografie is vaak bijzonder, met lettertypes uit lang vervlogen tijden, soms zeer fijn afgewerkt met een schaduwlijntje of subtiel gearceerd. Hoewel enkele van die typische letterstijlen beschikbaar zijn in digitaal formaat, kun je ze met een Adobe Illustratortechniek snel en eenvoudig toepassen op eender welk font.
