I have to apologise for the lack of updates on Unzipped for the past week and a half. Not only did I attend TYPO Berlin 2010 “Passion” last week; I also had a Type Board meeting at FSI - FontShop International the day before the conference, and on Thursday I presented my talk Fonts, a Passionate Love Story, or an Abusive Relationship? at TYPO. Now that I am fully recovered from the very satisfying but exhausting experience, I can go back to my duties. One of my favourite things at type and design conferences is going through the goodies in the goody bag. I thought for this first post-conference post we’d do it together and share the fun of the discovery.

The new foundries keep rolling in at FontShop. Jos Buivenga is a self-taught type designer based in Arnhem, the Netherlands, and the founder of the exljbris font foundry. Just like Flat-It Type Foundry his popular typefaces offer very good value for money, and what’s more – he offers one weight per family absolutely free. And it works, because after having tried this one weight users usually come back for more.

As the catalogue of FontShop continues to expand, it keeps surprising me how many people all over the world are professionally involved in type design. Sometimes you discover the most unlikely collections. The last FontShop Newsletter for example introduced Flat-It Type Foundry, which offers an eclectic range of display faces at terrific value for money. This one-man operation is run by Ryoichi Tsunekawa, a talented Japanese architecture grad whose appreciation for vintage lettering has yielded a charming library of novelty type for a variety of occasions.

FontLists are collections of related fonts and families on the FontShop website, curated by the FontShop Research Team. As the typefaces are hand selected for the FontLists and are continuously updated, certain collections can grow too big and need to be reshuffled. This recently happened with our Sans/Serif Companions FontList, and today I decided to split the main list into three handy collections: Text Faces, Slab Serifs, and Display Type. Time to get reacquainted with these very practical type systems.

A more diverse and beautiful web is about to unfold. The latest release of the FontFont® typeface library marks the beginning of a new era for typography — FSI FontShop® International is introducing the first ever stand-alone FontFonts for the web. Finally web designers can use professional typefaces for their projects aside from system fonts or webfont services. This long-awaited step enables a more seamless and effective transition from print design to the web.

There’s no better way to start a fresh new year – don’t be fooled: the decade ends on December 31st, 2010 ;) – than with a batch of fresh new FontFonts. This release features the beautiful and useful FF Yoga family with sans and serif partners, a pictorial companion for FF Mister K, and a whole batch of new Office FontFonts. Unrelated but interesting nonetheless – we’re also offering a useful mix of 25 pan-European Linotype fonts at an unusually low price. |

A new FontFont release is always sure to pique the interest of type lovers worldwide. Not only are existing FontFonts converted to OpenType and sometimes do they receive language extensions making them even more useful. Every release also features exciting new designs – this time FF Mach and FF Masala by fan favourites Łukasz Dziedzic and Xavier Dupré, and at last the Condensed Italic weights that complete the insanely popular FF DIN family. And this time FontFont is even launching a new font format specifically aimed at PC office users.

This afternoon I heard on the radio that today was National Day of The Sauna, so what better way to celebrate the occasion by spotlighting the type family with the same name. And Sauna comes with a special treat – the specimen book Read Naked showcases the Sauna fonts, and is printed with a remarkable ink revealed only by steam. It's such a clever vessel of word and art it will make a sauna junkie of anyone who touches it. |

Mac OS X comes with basic font management, but anyone with more than a few fonts needs a professional app to preview, organize, and activate fonts in their growing collection. We recommend FontCase, now available exclusively from FontShop. Pieter Omvlee and Laurent Baumann won an Apple Design Award this year for his app’s elegant UI backed by a powerful tagging system to help you manage fonts in an intuitive way. If you’ve used iPhoto or iTunes you’ll be instantly familiar with the FontCase interface. Click through for visual examples of FontCase at work, or download the full-featured demo and try it for yourself. Available for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and above.

Today – Tuesday June 30th, 2009 – is the very last day you can purchase Erik Spiekermann’s latest typeface for the promotional price of €19,90. Axel is an economical, highly legible font family optimized for on-screen use in office apps such as Microsoft Excel. From tomorrow on the family will cost €79,90 (both prices exclusive of VAT). So don’t waste any time and get Axel while it’s still so cheap! |
