 # 415.003, from Tokyo Japan. Photographer: Martin Holtkamp This is already the second issue of FS_eZien, the quarterly eZine in PDF format published by FontShop BeNeLux. The content is an overview of FontShop articles from the last three months, culled from FontShop publishing venues including – but not limited to – The FontFeed and Unzipped. It is a highly subjective selection. FS_eZien – a nod to our Dutch customers – can be viewed on screen, but is printable if you’d rather do your reading on paper. Enjoy the read. |

Wondrous things happen at FontShop BeNeLux. You may remember from the FontPool project that FontShop has a swimming pool. Well, “had” to be precise, because two years ago it started leaking through a hole in the foil lining the inside of the pool. These days there is barely a large puddle of water left, amassing dead leaves. Somehow a mother duck chose this makeshift sanctuary to lay her eggs. Meet FontDuck and her family.

Germany may have won the Eurovision Song Contest on May 29th, but the European Design Awards Ceremony in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the next day was very much a Dutch affair. Out of the 165 awards, nearly a fifth were swept by Dutch designers and agencies. Furthermore Amsterdam-based agency Lava was named Agency of the Year, Dutch/American design duo Strange Attractors won the coveted Jury Prize for their Letterlab project for Graphic Design Museum Breda, and Dutch design icon Gert Dumbar was inducted in the ED Hall of Fame.

Election posters in the Netherlands. Photo by Sander Baumann In Belgium we have until this weekend to make up our minds, but yesterday the Dutch already had national elections for the “Tweede Kamer”, their House of Representatives. Just like I did last year with the Belgian European and regional elections, I thought it’d be fun to take a look at the typography of the election posters. Regardless of who won the actual polls, here’s an overview of the best (and worst) typographic choices in Dutch politics.

Rebrand 100 is the highest recognition for excellence in brand repositioning, and is the first and only global, juried program of its kind. Today Design’s rebrand of Primus encompasses the creation of a new brand identity in order to increase the dynamism of the brand.

Don’t Believe the Type is a one day typographic festival, initiated by Dutch design agency Trapped in Suburbia. The second edition will be held in Shanghai on the 18th of May during the World Expo 2010, and will focus on the typographic excellence from The Hague. The day will be packed with workshops, lectures, and visual excitement provided by Underware, Yomar Augusto, Rogier Wieland, and Trapped in Suburbia. All these designers attended the renowned Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Their education has taught them respect for the tradition, and also instilled enthusiasm to make new, fresh and exciting typography. |

Fred Smeijers’ and Corina Cotorobai’s creations are not exclusively typographic. The latest project of the renowned Dutch type designer and his partner (who – together with FontShop BeneLux head honcho Rudy Geeraerts – run OurType) is in fact a tiny human. Indeed, early morning last Friday, April 23rd, Corina gave birth to their son, Gabriel. |

From 8 to 30 may 2010 the second edition of Graphic Design Festival Breda (GDFB) will take place. This biannual festival on graphic design delves into current developments in this discipline. A large part of it takes place in the public space. The festival aims to surprise the general public and inspire professionals by revealing the communicative powers of graphic design within our daily visual culture. In a surprising though perceptible manner, talented designers connect graphic design, technology (like new media), social context (the presence of graphic design in one’s own environment / daily life) and the individual (the consumer).

Starting next month VIDE (Visual & Individual Design Experiences) is organizing Type Anatomy workshops. These introductions to type design aim at imparting insight in the basis of letters, type classification, character construction, and letter proportions. In five Saturday mornings or afternoons from May 22 to June 19 the participants will systematically analyse letters, and learn how to evaluate the qualities of type. |
