Fred Smeijers’ and Corina Cotorobai’s creations are not exclusively typographic. The latest project of the renowned Dutch type designer and his partner (who – together with FontShop BeneLux head honcho Rudy Geeraerts – run OurType) is in fact a tiny human. Indeed, early morning last Friday, April 23rd, Corina gave birth to their son, Gabriel.

Roasted vegetarians? “Yah, totally misleading. There was nothing but a few vegetable slices inside.” © Emma Jane Hogbin
I just love Friday 13th, as it always gives me an excuse to post total and utter silliness on Unzipped. This time no contest, but a funny and often hilarious Group Pool on Flickr – Bad Menus! It compiles bad and funny restaurant menus, signs and food packages. The images feature egregious misspellings, bad translations, lousy visual layout, and disgusting-looking food. If you have some time to burn, dive in!

This is a difficult post for me, because it deals with a very delicate subject. I’ve hesitated, yet I feel compelled to write something about the appropriate use of specific typefaces. The day before yesterday my wife and I attended a funeral, and it was one of the rare times I regretted I can't help but notice type and recognise typefaces, in whatever context I see them.

At the end of April the province of East Flanders launched its new logo and identity program. The purpose of the new logo and slogan “For every one of us” is to make the province more recognisable and generate an East-Flemish feeling of cohesion. The new logo consists of an O and a V formed by one single brush stroke, in a colour that transitions from orange to red. Since the new logo was announced I’ve had the feeling that I’d seen it before, and last week I discovered where.

In Western folklore, today – Friday the 13th – is considered a day of bad luck. To ‘celebrate’ this day of superstition we would like to run a little contest. Send us a picture of your favourite typo or typographic mishap and you could win a gorgeous hand printed specimen of wood type Chaparral, printed by Scott Polzen.

With the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing drawing closer, I couldn’t help but think of the revolutionary set of pictograms Otl Aicher developed for the 1972 Munich Olympics. These pictograms were influential to such a degree that they spawned a wave of similar designs that still continues to this day. Unfortunately some of these pictograms and logos are less successful than others as these examples amply show.

Are you one of those persons who cringe at the sight of a double space in an otherwise impeccably produced art book? Does it make your stomach churn when in the tracklisting on a CD packaging the first letter of a song title is mistakenly set in the same style as the number? Despair not, help is on its way. The Design Police devised the Visual Enforcement Kit, a downloadable set of stickers you can apply on whatever typographical and other design mistakes you might encounter. Try it – the feeling of vindication is pure bliss. ;)

Sometimes you have to know when to stop trying and start thinking out of the box (or the paper tray for that matter). Who needs kerning and spacing when the solution is so obvious?
