Election posters in the Netherlands. Photo by Sander Baumann
In Belgium we have until this weekend to make up our minds, but yesterday the Dutch already had national elections for the “Tweede Kamer”, their House of Representatives. Just like I did last year with the Belgian European and regional elections, I thought it’d be fun to take a look at the typography of the election posters. Regardless of who won the actual polls, here’s an overview of the best (and worst) typographic choices in Dutch politics.

A while ago Belgian branding company Today Design and Haacht Brewery won the prestigious the ‘2010 Rebrand Global Award’. Primus was named one of the world’s most effective rebrands in the sixth edition of these annual awards. Rebrand 100 is the highest recognition for excellence in brand repositioning, and is the first and only global, juried program of its kind. Today Design’s rebrand of Primus encompasses the creation of a new brand identity in order to increase the dynamism of the brand.

O.K. Festival: 3 Days of Magazines – a unique three day festival focusing on independent magazines – opens on Friday April 16th, 2010. It is the first event in the Netherlands to offer a survey of independent magazines from all over the world. Under the title “Welcome Magazines” O.K. Festival presents the energy, diversity, and the visual explosion of strange, beautiful and original magazines. They are displayed in an exhibition, examined in workshops by renown magazine makers, discussed in presentations, and celebrated with a party. The festival takes place in Arnhem, and follows previous festivals about independent magazines in Luxemburg, Barcelona, and Tokyo.

A little while ago the winners of the Dutch book design competition The Best Dutch Book Designs 2009 were announced. This year thirty books were selected from a total of 415 entries. Later this year the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will organise the opening exhibition De Best Verzorgde Boeken 2009. This will coincide with the publication of the catalogue The Best Dutch Book Designs 2009 / De Best Verzorgde Boeken. The selection will subsequently travel to various national and international locations.

To keep you going while I am gathering all the information for the Dutch Best Designed Books 2009 competition, here’s already the participants and winner of that other Dutch book contest, the Mooiste Boekomslag van 2010 (The Most Beautiful Book Cover 2010). This year the prize was won by the designer trio Dog and Pony who designed the cover for Wat is de wat by Dave Eggers.

When adding samples to the FontShop galleries we often come across work that somehow managed to slip under our radar. A tweet by Bart van der Griendt led me to the visual identity for OKRA, which won a red dot award for outstanding design in the category Corporate Design. It was designed by Dutch design agency Koeweiden Postma, who used Bryant 2 exclusively for the corporate branding.

The new Gallery tabs on fontshop.com were introduced at the beginning of the year, and already our collection of expanded sample graphics and examples of the type in use in the real world is rapidly growing. Besides providing a valuable source of inspiration, the Gallery function can be used to put your own design work in the spotlight.

For such a purely visual medium, type and typography mostly play an subordinate role in television, at least in Belgium. Text matter often looks rather safe, predictable, and utilitarian. Seldom does a channel identity grab you because of its surprising choice of type. An exception are VTM and 2BE, the two main commercial television channels of the VMMA. They use two somewhat less common type families to great effect in both their on screen and print branding.

Not that we were a-social to begin with, far from that, but since a little while FontShop BeNeLux has incorporated a number of social media channels in its communication activities. Although FontShop and FontFont already have Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, Behance, Isuu, … accounts, FontShop BeNeLux thought it would be useful to deliver localised information to our customers in The Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxemburg. Plus now you can share any Unzipped post by simply clicking the appropriate icon in the navigation side bar.
