O.K. Festival: 3 Days of Magazines – a unique three day festival focusing on independent magazines – opens on Friday April 16th, 2010. It is the first event in the Netherlands to offer a survey of independent magazines from all over the world. Under the title “Welcome Magazines” O.K. Festival presents the energy, diversity, and the visual explosion of strange, beautiful and original magazines. They are displayed in an exhibition, examined in workshops by renown magazine makers, discussed in presentations, and celebrated with a party. The festival takes place in Arnhem, and follows previous festivals about independent magazines in Luxemburg, Barcelona, and Tokyo.

A little while ago the winners of the Dutch book design competition The Best Dutch Book Designs 2009 were announced. This year thirty books were selected from a total of 415 entries. Later this year the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will organise the opening exhibition De Best Verzorgde Boeken 2009. This will coincide with the publication of the catalogue The Best Dutch Book Designs 2009 / De Best Verzorgde Boeken. The selection will subsequently travel to various national and international locations.

With all the new OpenType formats it gets a little difficult sometimes to see the wood for the trees. Inevitably every system has its downsides. If you offer few choices font users may feel their options are restricted. But when proposing numerous alternatives to meet the users’ wishes, ironically said users may feel overwhelmed and not know very well what the best option is. So I thought it’d be useful to do a round-up of the different OpenType formats available for FontFonts. I will use FF DIN as an example, as it is one of the families with the most options.

There are currently over 100,000 applications available in the App Store. And every single one of those apps has an icon. Dutch art director Ine Reijnen scoured them all, assembling an alphabet made from app icons consisting of single letters, numbers, and related symbol. She is now inviting everyone to send in Appoems, poetry of maximum 16 characters set in her Apphabet.

FontLists are collections of related fonts and families on the FontShop website, curated by the FontShop Research Team. As the typefaces are hand selected for the FontLists and are continuously updated, certain collections can grow too big and need to be reshuffled. This recently happened with our Sans/Serif Companions FontList, and today I decided to split the main list into three handy collections: Text Faces, Slab Serifs, and Display Type. Time to get reacquainted with these very practical type systems.

The most recent upgrade of the FontShop website – which amongst others saw the addition of Norway to the available shop regions – seems to have caused a glitch in the system. Every time you access fontshop.com please make sure to select the correct region at the bottom of the web page! We will notify you as soon as this minor default has been resolved.

To keep you going while I am gathering all the information for the Dutch Best Designed Books 2009 competition, here’s already the participants and winner of that other Dutch book contest, the Mooiste Boekomslag van 2010 (The Most Beautiful Book Cover 2010). This year the prize was won by the designer trio Dog and Pony who designed the cover for Wat is de wat by Dave Eggers.
