FF Meta Wood

:: UPDATE ::
* Zoals je hieronder kan lezen gaat het om een misverstand, en is het Scott Polzen die het houtsnijwerk deed. Hij was zo vriendelijk om mij een link te sturen naar Letterspace Summer 2006 – de publicatie van TDC die onder andere op ATypI 2006 Lisbon uitgedeeld werd – waarvoor hij een artikel schreef over dit project. Onderaan deze pagina staat een link naar de PDF van de publicatie.

nice wooden Meta! But i don't want to take credit for them -- i had them made by a friend in Vancouver, Scott Polzen, who started cutting a few letters as a student project. I then encouraged him to cut a whole set and had a second one made for Tobias.

Oops, I must've misunderstood you. I thought you started cutting a few letters but then had your friend Scott finish that set and make another one. I stand corrected. I must say they look great. Is it possible that this is the very first type design that crossed media in the opposite direction -- from digital to wood? :P

I thought you started cutting a few letters No, but i did give him a few tips about Pantographs, fitting letters, sidebearings etc. People have started making wood type again, but i don't think anybody has bothered using new digital artwork for that.

Nice to see this set again! I'm still making wood type by hand, but I've also started to experiment with a pantograph. It's a much different process of course, but still just as exciting to watch each character take physical form.

Hi Scott, great to see you've come over to take a look at this post. Congratulations on this beautiful job; many people have commented offline that it's a gorgeous set.

Thanks! If there is anyone else out there who is doing this kind of work, I would love to get in touch and talk shop. Jim Rimmer here in Vancouver has been a great help and inspiration to me, but he is quite a rare bird!

If anyone is interested in reading a bit about this project, Type Directors Club published an article I wrote in their Summer 2006 edition of Letterspace. Hope this link works: Letterspace Summer 2006

Can you e-mail me the link, Scott? The one in the Unzipped notification message doesn't work neither. See the bottom of the right hand yellow column.
