Winner of the Most Beautiful Book Cover 2010
Mid-February the cover for Wat is de wat by author Dave Eggers was proclaimed the Most Beautiful Book Cover 2010 by the Dutch book sellers. It was created by designer trio Dog and Pony. On the winning cover five red blotches, not unlike drops of blood, turn the shape of the African continent into a foot print. It is a striking metaphor for the epic journey of Valentino Achak Deng, a refugee from the second Sudanese civil war who walked thousands of miles from his decimated village to relative safety in Ethiopia and later Kenya. The cover for Wat is de wat is one of four, designed for a bundled edition of Dave Eggers’ novels for Lebowski publishers.
The award was presented in the building of the Special Collections of the Amsterdam University Library. Dog and Pony – the recipients of the award – are an Amsterdam-based trio of designers. Bart Heideman, Pol van Haren and Robert Adriaansen also designed another nominated cover, for Nietzsche en Kant lezen de krant by author Rob Wijnberg.

Ron van Roon’s cover for De man en zijn fiets by author Wilfried de Jong was second best, and Roald Triebels who designed Het Diner by Herman Koch won third place.
The election of the Most Beautiful Book Cover is an initiative by Boekblad and Stichting De Best Verzorgde Boeken. The seven-strong jury, composed of book sellers, evaluated twelve covers for this ninth edition. Below are the other nominated covers.
