This afternoon I heard on the radio that today was National Day of The Sauna, so what better way to celebrate the occasion by spotlighting the type family with the same name. Sauna is a type family by the type design trio extraordinaire Akiem Helmling, Bas Jacobs and Sami Kortemäki that make up Underware. By releasing carefully designed and engineered typefaces at a slow but steady rate they have built somewhat of a cult folowing, yet are also popular with a wider audience. Their creations carry a recognisable “Dutch” stamp. Besides being beautiful they look fun and friendly, and come with a gazillion typographic extras to satisfy even the most demanding graphic designer or typophile.

Sauna radiates warmth and comfort with a contemporary flair. The family consists of Regular, Bold and Black weights. The Regular and Bold weights are designed to complement each other in all type sizes, from fine text to display settings. The Regular weight is bundled with Small Caps, while the Black weight is designed specifically for larger display sizes. For each weight there are two italics: the Normal Italic and a Swash Italic. Besides the ten core fonts which make up Sauna, each weight also includes a special ligature font. These work particularly well with the Swash Italics. But wait – there’s more! Whimsical layered dingbats add colour to your typography.

Read Naked is the first demonstration of Sauna. More than just a specimen, it is an in-depth investigation of the world of saunas. The typeface Sauna is presented in a context which is more broad than the world of typography, creating sensations of steamy pleasure not only in the minds of graphic designers, but deep inside those whose lives are not connected to ligatures and small caps. The book was designed to withstand reading inside a sauna bath without any damage: it is resistant to hot water in its steaming, gaseous state at a temperature of 120 degrees Celsius/248 degrees Fahrenheit. Even better, some parts of the book can only be read inside a sauna at a minimum of 80 degrees Celsius/176 degrees Fahrenheit! Go ahead, outfit the office breakroom with wooden benches and a bucket of hot coals, Underware is making design fun again.
