Have you ever cursed complex forms you had to design? I know I have in my 15+ years of experience as a graphic designer. Although I really like information design and love researching novel solutions for making forms easier to navigate and use, there’s just so much work involved in drawing all those little lines, combs, boxes et al. And the most difficult part is when you want to match those drawn elements with type. Do you stick to the proportional face you’re using in the rest of the document with all the ensuing alignment problems? Do you switch to a monospaced face and settle for a more limited range in weights and styles?

Well, I’ve got splendid news. Frederik Berlaen – our resident type designer and KABK Type & Media alumnus – has created TMT Comb, a rich OpenType font family specifically designed for such purposes. It’s a monospaced humanist sans that comes in six weights, Regular, Bold and Black with matching Italics. This Pro family covers Turkish, Central European and Baltic on top of the “standard” languages.

Kammen, the seventh font in the family, includes a multitude of line and box elements that allow the user to compose the most intricate form elements. Those elements are available under different key positions in three line widths matching the font weights. But it doesn’t end there. Frederik commits to add specific graphic elements that might be missing in the Kammen font if they are needed by customers who purchase the family.

The TMT Comb font family is available exclusively from FontShop BeNeLux; the package includes both PostScript and Truetype flavoured OpenType fonts (the latter for use in MS Word and such). A license for up to 5 users costs €350,- and can be ordered via e-mail. If you need a multi-user license for more than 5 users please contact us.

This is nice. I congratulate Frederik Berlaen with his hard work; it's a font family with extra tools, more than "just" another font (like I can get enough of new fonts, but ok).. Show some examples guys, make a form or two.. probably there are more than a dozen tests from testing anyway ;) However, I think the seventh member of the family should be (can be) added to existing fonts as well, I mean, a special font with form elements added to one of the bigger FF families is "all" it takes. Make it a standard for those FF super families, haha. Thanks for the hard work.. want to try it.. forms are great.. hehehe

The PDF contains typical form elements on page 2, so you should have a very good notion of what the possibilities are. And I show what the different characters do on the specimen sheet on page 4.

One of the great features is the spacing of the Kammen elements which are twice the width of the 'regular' fonts. So by adding a space between each letter, pre-printed characters in the forms align perfectly with the Kammen elements.
