Possibly the most beautiful and original ‘card’ for the Christmas Card Challenge was sent to us off competition. As Kristof Kimpe – The Man From Gotcha – and his wife expected their first-born son at the end of January he decided not to bother with a Christmas nor New Year’s card and invested his energy and creativity in conceiving a very special birth announcement.
As he explains in his e-mail “it is not my intention to compete with the Christmas Card Challenge. Yet as I consider this contest to be a very nice initiative and because I created a quite ‘typographically-minded’ birth announcement I couldn’t help myself but mail it to you. :)”
“Our son was named Bruce because of the shared admiration of mommy and daddy for Bruce Springsteen. That is why the birth announcement was designed with the American rocker in mind (with titles, fragments of lyrics and fun references) and took shape as a genuine 45 RPM vinyl single. My intention was to conjure a retro atmosphere that is reminiscent of the early days of rock’n’roll, which accounts for the colourful typography. Real 45 RPM singles were recycled and had adapted labels applied to them.”
Well, all I can say is… Wow! This might very well be the best birth announcement I ever saw. Everything is picture perfect, from the colourful design and the well-chosen type down to the wear and the use of genuine 45 RPM singles. This production betrays a love for design and typography and an attention to detail that is a true joy to behold. A rare and splendid achievement.
