Meet the stars of 2007

When the 100 Beste Schriften list and website was announced at the beginning of 2007 I was a bit puzzled. Why promote typefaces that are already overused and far too popular for their own good? I never quite understood why they needed to be put in the spotlight yet again. This reminds me of The Hotlist, a programme on Studio Brussel, my favourite Belgian radio station. Basically it’s a ranking of the songs that have been played the most during the past week. So this means that after having been pummelled to death by certain songs for a week, you get to hear them all over again in a weekend chart.

Going back to 100 Beste Schriften, wouldn’t it be better to devote this energy on promoting lesser known and far more challenging type designs? Aren’t we more interested in learning something new, rather than getting those same old tired fonts rammed down our throats one more time? Do we care that Céline Dion is a very popular artist and has sold gazillions of CDs? Do we really need to repackage her commercial crap and make her sell even more? Because that’s what happens with those 100 Beste Schriften. More of the same, but in a different wrapper.

Personally I’d rather listen to Volt and get introduced to the new albums of Beirut and Burial. This is why I think the new Font Stars promotion is a far better and novel idea: compose a CD-ROM with selected weights of noteworthy new typefaces releases from 2007 at an interesting price. Font Stars is not some lame collection of left-overs. These are all quality typefaces by today’s hot designers and foundries. The text faces include all necessary weights to allow you to compose professional text, and the display faces are varied and useful. Plus some of these designs are so fresh they’re not featured on the FontShop website yet!

The CD-ROM costs €499,- ex. VAT and includes the following typefaces:

Hi dear Unzipper. I understand your bore with the 100 Best and your craving fo new and adventurous, but the comparison doesn't work. Studio Brussels is all about the hip and new - week and weekendlist - while the 100 Beste are the choice of the whole field and highlights by connoisseurs. Imagine Studio Brussels boys & girls getting to know the 100 best songs ever, the choice not being limited by the well-guarded profile of their radio station? That would open eyes. (ears for that matter) Every teacher in graphic design knows that you have to show newbies what good fonts are, or your student keep messing with free fonts and the stolen hypes of their generation. Maybe the 100 Beste was just not ment for you and many readers of this great blog, although even some of those are looking for this kind of base-level information. And now let's see what's inside FontStars. Yummie! P

Here in the Netherlands it?s even worse: several weeks are spent on broadcasting the ?Top 1000 of All Times? ? something they do EVERY YEAR. How silly can you become, Mr. Broadcaster? End of Flame. ; ) Anyway, I already bought this great compilation and am looking forward to using the wonderful fonts in it. (A little minus: I already owned the P22 Underground Pro collection, but even taking this into account it still is a great value.)
