In the field of graphic design and production qualities Flanders can be proud of its output in books. During the past decades Flemish book production did a significant amount of catching-up, and this has resulted in a number of beauties in design and printing.

That is why the Vlaamse Uitgevers Vereniging (Flemish Association of Publishers) and the Plantin Society have made it a yearly tradition to present the Plantin-Moretus Awards for best produced books in Flanders. These awards are given to books which distinguish themselves for their design, illustrations and production qualities. The Awards are given in different categories: - literature (prose, poetry, theatre, essays, history of literature);
- educational and scientific publications;
- art- and photo books and exhibition catalogues;
- miscellaneous non-fiction;
- children’s books;
- bibliophile editions;
- work by Flemish designers, regardless where it’s been published.

The Awards were presented last Wednesday, September 26th, during a ceremony at the Permeke Library in Antwerp. The jury consisted of six specialists: Danny Dobbelaere (chairman), Jan Darthet (expert book production), Marc Mombaerts (expert pre-press and printing), Louis Van den Eede (expert typography), Nicolaas De Schryver (expert bookbinding) and Nej De Doncker (expert graphic design). They awarded the following five publications:

Five other publications received nominations or honours. The awarded and nominated books will be exhibited in Belgium en abroad: at the Permeke Library till October 14, at the Book Art International exhibition (Frankfurter Buchmesse, Germany, October 10–14), at the Boekenbeurs (Antwerp, Belgium, October 31–November 11) and at the Best Book Design from all over the World (Leipzig, Germany, March 13–16, 2008)
