Les Ballets C de la B | designed by Betty Reyniers & Peter De Roy (Signbox)

In the field of graphic design and production qualities Flanders can be proud of its output in books. During the past decades Flemish book production did a significant amount of catching-up, and this has resulted in a number of beauties in design and printing.

That is why the Vlaamse Uitgevers Vereniging (Flemish Association of Publishers) and the Plantin Society have made it a yearly tradition to present the Plantin-Moretus Awards for best produced books in Flanders. These awards are given to books which distinguish themselves for their design, illustrations and production qualities.

The Awards are given in different categories:

  • literature (prose, poetry, theatre, essays, history of literature);
  • educational and scientific publications;
  • art- and photo books and exhibition catalogues;
  • miscellaneous non-fiction;
  • children’s books;
  • bibliophile editions;
  • work by Flemish designers, regardless where it’s been published.

The Awards were presented last Wednesday, September 26th, during a ceremony at the Permeke Library in Antwerp.

The jury consisted of six specialists: Danny Dobbelaere (chairman), Jan Darthet (expert book production), Marc Mombaerts (expert pre-press and printing), Louis Van den Eede (expert typography), Nicolaas De Schryver (expert bookbinding) and Nej De Doncker (expert graphic design). There's some very nice work among the nominees, but I'd say it is a pity that they have failed to mention the typefaces used in the nominated works.

I think I can gather that information -- some of it (but not all) was mentioned in the jury report. Give me a little time and I'll take care of that.

Downloaded the jury report. Very nice, but too bad that the illustrations are low res. Kind of makes it hard to appreciate the designs? ; )

Dag Maurice.

;-) voila :-)
