The sixth edition of the free FontShop magazine Font themes around global design with a local focus. This issue is beautifully designed by Conor Mangat – designer of the delicious Platelet featured in my recent article on license plate typography. Apart from shining a spotlight on selected typefaces and foundries, it features articles on South Africa, Sarajevo, São Paulo, Iran, and Havana.

The 26 Letters project is a group of dedicated South African graphic designers and writers that have produced almost 70 posters to bring attention to violent crime and one of its notable precursors, illiteracy.

The Featured Distractions highlights lesser known typefaces that'll spruce up your next project without you having to resort to the tried and tired usual suspects.

Sarajevo, recently rocked by civil war, has been characterized by a chain of historic events that conjures strong emotions in its people and the global community. Amongst the generation of young artists, architects and designers pushing past those shadowy reminders toward a reappraisal of the city, we find rising new star Aleksandra Nina Knežević.

New foundries introduced in this issue are Amsterdam based Angus R. Shamal’s ARS Type, PSY/OPS from San Francisco, French foundry Présence Typo by Thierry Puyfoulhoux, and the Red Rooster Collection.

Tony de Marco documents the effects on the São Paulo cityscape of mayor Gilberto Kassab’s new ‘clean city’ legislation that outlaws all form of outdoor advertising.

A concise profile of Iranian designer Reza Abedini illustrates how the young designer embraced technology, using new tools and the flexibility they offered to both restore and reinterpret calligraphy in contemporary design for print.

As the design director for one of Cuba’s most active cultural centres, Pepe Menéndez is committed to redevelopment, doing what he can to bring attention to Cuba’s design community. He’s also started his own historic preservation project, collecting photographs of typography in use throughout the city.

Send an e-mail with your name and address to get Font 006. Font 006 is available free of charge for FontShop BeNeLux clients. Art and design students can obtain a free copy if they include proof of their attendance to art school. And if you are neither, just give us a very good reason and we’ll be generous. ;)

Strikt genomen beslissen wij daar niet over, maar ik kan het voorstellen aan de powers that be.
