I’m quite partial to split screen techniques in movie posters. I’ve always thought it was interesting when methods specific to a certain medium are translated to a related medium – in this instance movie techniques to a movie poster. The split screen allows for a richer and more complex narrative within the limitations of a single poster.

The poster for London To Brighton is a nice example of this, plus it features a clever instance of ‘multiple reading’. By giving the ‘to’ in ‘Brighton’ the same colour as ‘London’ directly above it, the movie title correctly reads as ‘London to Brighton’ without the ‘to’ actually being there. It’s such a terrible shame the title is set in Arial

Persepolis – the animated feature adapted from the acclaimed graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi – provides gorgeous base material for its poster. The beautiful quality of the illustration combines perfectly with the bold, slightly sharp Bureau Eagle Bold.

I was talking about multiple readings earlier on – here’s is the image version of this technique. The poster of the French movie Roman De Gare has a mosaic of tiny colour pictures embedded in a high-contrast black-and-white group portrait of the three lead roles. It works very well, and even makes me a tad more forgiving about that tired old Compacta used for the movie title. The only thing I regret is that the right-hand side of the list of names of the actors doesn’t follow the slant of said title.

Although I absolutely loathe horror and particularly torture porn movies, I couldn’t help but admit a couple of months ago that the posters for Saw were clever, efficient and very well done. This is clearly not the case with both posters for Hostel Part II shown above, although the right-hand side poster which we’re seeing here in Belgium is far better than the one on the left. Simply put it’s exploitive, cheap and dumb. By showing a naked girl holding a severed head nothing is left for the imagination. Thus the poster implodes into a sorry cliché and literal representation of the movie genre itself. Torture porn; naked girl holding severed head; get it?

What the right-hand side one has going for it is the surprising composition, and the fact that nothing is really shown. It is left to the viewer’s imagination what kind of horrors the girl is subjected to. Still nothing for me though.
