Today marks Unzipped’s first anniversary. Exactly one year ago I posted my first three entries, after having done a test run with the premiere of my movie poster critiques the day before.

The initial plan – as explained in my introductory post – was to write in Dutch, with occasionally English and French translations. However it soon became obvious that I couldn’t free up enough time to do these translations. It is for that exact same reason that I discontinued my English tutorials on The FontFeed.

At several moments the past year I have been discussing with Rudy whether or not to switch to English, but I was unsure as to how my Dutch-speaking audience would react to that. To me it felt a bit like “betraying” them, silly as it may sound. It was my trip to Typo Berlin last week that convinced me that the switch would be beneficial. I encountered some French-speaking compatriots who lamented the fact that Unzipped didn't cater for half the population of Belgium, and even Dutch-speaking readers reassured me that a switch would not be taken badly. Plus the language issue possibly prevents further growth.

So tonight I am pleased to announce a new era in the existence of this blog. Unzipped will switch to (mostly) English. Announcements for local and Dutch language events will continue to be posted in Dutch, but the bulk of the entries will now be readable by everyone. I hope this won’t slow me down too much, because Dutch is still my native language, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

I hope you’ll enjoy the ride. I sure will.

Congratulations Yves! We will be happy to read in either english/dutch/french -- just post more often, to the point, and dare to approach also less safe subjects. TypoBerlin is over, but there was no single post about it, for example. They say, good news = fresh news! We're waiting, faithfully yours...

Bedankt, Yves. And bedankt also to the belgium/flaams-or-dutch-speaking-readers, that you are so generous to let the rest of the world read the thoughts of this marvellous man, too.

Thankoo thankoo thankoo for the kind words. I'm not worthy, really. Thank you all for sticking around, and for the comments on the threads. I really like it when we get some dialogue going. :)

OK There is something wrong with my e-mail notification, because I'm not receiving warnings for new comments and I missed both Co's and Tijl's. I just noticed that Co has some specific wishes for Unzipped. It's true I attended Type Berlin, but I hadn't really planned on reporting about it. I was invited and already went beyond the call of duty by offering to do a presentation, so I considered I'd already done my share. But if you insist, I'll write up a report; just bear with me while I gather some images'n'stuff. And about posting more often... that is a source of frustration for myself. I'd really like to, but my full-time job plus freelance work, family and involvement in a pop/rock band make that a little hard. It often happens that I get home from work, spend a little time with the kids and my wife and then start working all over again, writing for Unzipped often till two, even three in the morning. Then I have to get up at seven to drive the kids to school. Let's say I write more than Stephen and less than Jürgen (but sometimes I suspect he doesn't do anything else, because boy does he post often!).

Conratulations on your first anniversary. I join the chorus of many who are pleased about the switch to English. Now the Yvesy goodness is available to a vast new audience of type hungry designers.

Yves, you've done a great job this last year. As a journalist turned graphic designer, I recognize the quality of your writing as well as your discerning eye on everything visual. Your hesitation to switch to English might have had to do with losing your native language. This narrows down your toolbox for expression somewhat. A price well paid for addressing a greater audience, I think. Especially if the difference doesn't feel like that big of a transition. Een welgemeend compliment.
